Star India launches hotStar video streaming site

Star India has embarked on a soft launch of an all encompassing over-the-top (OTT) video service by the name of hotStar, which is now streaming TV shows, films and sports coverage to multiple online devices.

Currently in beta version, the OTT streaming service is reportedly providing some 20,000 hours of content across India, including over 120 TV programmes from the Star network, live coverage of cricket, football, tennis and kabbadi, as well Bollywood and regional films – in Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Bengali, Malayalam, Marathi.

The broadcast network calls the platform the "most compelling catalogue ever offered over-the-top on mobile and the Web, making it the most complete video destination for consumers," according to

Star's online subscription sports platform,, recently celebrated its second birthday amid claims it is the most popular sporting site in India. Meanwhile, its StarPlayer video-on-demand (VOD) site in India is now reportedly re-directing users to the new hotStar platform.

The network's future plans for its existing digital sites remain unclear.
