Eddie Jones is set to become England's first foreign head coach, after talks with Rugby Football Union chief executive Ian Ritchie.
The Australian, 55, was in London on Thursday to finalise the details of his appointment, which could be confirmed by the end of the week.
Former Australia and Japan coach Jones needs to first secure his release from South African franchise the Stormers.
A Stormers source said Jones had signed a "long-term contract" in Cape Town.
It is understood Bristol are prepared for an approach from the RFU for forwards coach Steve Borthwick, who worked with Jones at Saracens and Japan.
South African Jake White had also been under consideration for the job of head coach.
However, White - a World Cup winner with the Springboks in 2007 - is not thought to be at the top of the organisation's wish-list to succeed Stuart Lancaster, who left the job after England's failed 2015 World Cup campaign.
