Alcatel-Lucent and Telefónica have enabled a new cloud-based TV feature for Movistar TV in Spain. Using Alcatel-Lucent's DVR solution, Movistar subscribers now have access to up to 350 hours of personal online recording through their set-top boxes (STBs).

The solution includes an innovative 'mosaic' TV feature for major sporting events which allows customers to select between six different streams of live action, one of the main features of Movistar's recently launched sports programming.

Alcatel-Lucent is said to be giving Telefónica a clearly differentiated offer in the Spanish market, reinforcing its already strong position with 800,000 subs plus 1.6 million from Canal+.

The technology solutions package includes: personal online recording, providing each customer with unlimited simultaneous channel recording and up to 350 hours of network DVR storage; mosaic for sporting events; and support for Telefónica's fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) deployment as part of the Movistar Fusión service.

"As Telefónica expands its fibre-to-the-home network it is also expanding its Movistar TV customer base," said Roque Lozano, president of Alcatel-Lucent Spain and global account manager for Telefónica. "The success of the new features has been such that we are already exploring how we can increase the capacity and efficiency of the platform to handle the rapid growth in subscribers expected in the next year."
