Thai cable companies seek end to digital TV subsidy programme

Thailand's cable TV operators are calling for a halt to the planned distribution of coupons for subsidised digital set-top boxes.
In a letter to the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), Thailand Cable TV Association (TCTA) said the project, which will cost around THB25 billion, will not fully benefit the public and 'was prone to collusion due to its lack of clarity'.
TCTA president Nattachai Aksonradit said the decision to increase the number of households receiving the subsidy coupons from 22 million to 25 million, and the increase in the coupon's value from BHT690 to BHT1,000, were made without supporting information, according to the National News Bureau of Thailand.
He also criticised the lack of safeguards to ensure the coupons went to the needy.
