A survey by the European Audiovisual Observatory has discovered huge appetite for video-on-demand (VOD), identifying 3,088 services.
The On-Demand Audiovisual Markets in the European Union report from the Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology of the European Commission found that of this number 1,104 were catch-up TV services (services listed), 711 branded channels of broadcasters on open platforms and 409 VOD film services.
The UK was the EU VOD hot spot with 682 services established, followed by France (434) and Germany (330). The report also found that 223 services established in the US and targeting European countries are currently available in one or several European countries.
The analysis also revealed the growing number and importance of cross-border and pan-European circulation of on-demand services, with around three-fifths of the VOD services available in individual EU member states established in one other country.
From a business perspective, the principal VOD business models were advertising-financed on-demand services from catch-up TV, open platform, branded channels, etc; transactional VOD services including both rental and retail; subscription VOD (SVOD); and on-demand media services provided by public broadcasters.
