South Africa's broadcast signal distributor Sentech is to invest ZAR902.3 million (US$84.58 million) over the next three years to build an over-the-top (OTT) video delivery platform.
The state-owned organisation will develop digital content distribution and management network services to offer community and public television content on multiple devices, including tablets, smartphones and PCs, reports ITWeb.
From the start of the 2016 financial year, Sentech says South Africa's 2010 football World Cup hub at Nasrec will pilot an OTT platform delivering content directly to user devices.
With a surge in on-demand consumption, the OTT market is expected to double between 2013 and 2017 to reach ZAR709 million ($66.46 million) in spend each year, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers.
