Increasing sizes of display panels for TVs and other devices are driving growing demand in the total flat-panel-display (FPD) area according to research from IHS.

IHSflastpanelThe strength of this growth is such that the analyst argues that once focused on unit growth, the entire global FPD industry is now shifting to focus on area-demand growth. It calculates that display panel shipments for all FPD applications grew 9%, year-over-year, to reach 168.9 million square metres in 2014. IHS expects Total FPD display area demand to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5% from 2012, reaching 223.6 million square metres.

"The trend toward bigger displays continued in the flat panel display industry in 2014," said Yoshio Tamura, director of display research for IHS Technology, and author of the Quarterly Worldwide FPD Shipment and Forecast Report. "There were four major driving forces leading to a strong upgrade of the average FPD display sizes: consumer demand for larger LCD TVs, soaring demand for 5-inch-and-larger smartphones, larger automotive display screens and larger tablet PCs."

Drilling deeper into reasons behind this LCD TV demand, IHS noted the availability of 4KTVs of an ultra-slim type, with slim bezel, better picture quality by wider colour gamut and dynamic contrast ratio, new sizes launched by the panel makers and new smart TV platforms.
