Latin American pay-TV has gained a strong foothold in Chile, where the industry has grown the most among the seven largest markets in the region.
According to the latest figures published by Dataxis, Chile grew by 9.67% during the first nine months of 2014, closing the third quarter with over 2.8 million subs.
After adding 200,000 subs between January and September 2014 – according to the official figures of Subtel – the Chilean market is clearly dominated by direct-to-home (DTH), which has gathered most of the growth in the analysed period and currently represents 52% of all pay-TV subs.
The second fastest grower among the seven largest markets was Venezuela, whose pay-TV subs base increased by 8.37%, ending Q3 with 4.4 million subscribers, followed by Brazil (7.56%) and Mexico (5.19%).
“At a greater or lesser rate, depending mostly on the penetration levels that pay-TV had already reached in each market, the Latin American countries together continue to exhibit a growth rate located above the global average”, explained Juan Pablo Conti, Dataxis’ senior analyst.
Argentina was the market growing less, showing to be very stabilised and increasing subs by 0.43%. The other two countries included in the list of largest markets, Colombia and Peru, increased their subs by 4.85% and 3.87% respectively during the first nine months of 2014.
